はかない口溶け、古の恋心に思いを馳せて
A texture as fleeting as love in an old poem
米納津屋の「雲がくれ」 8ヶ入り1,050円～
新潟県に入ると、新幹線移動ということもあって、よく長岡や新潟市内を中心に回るのですが、気まぐれに燕三条で降り、思い立つままに弥彦神社へ向かいまして、吉田に本店がある米納津屋へ。
こちらには、僕がずっと気になっている銘菓があるのです。
以前、新潟の百貨店で購入したことがあったのですが、ちゃんとお店を見て見たいなあと思っていて、弥彦の支店を訪れたのでした。
ちょうど秋の終わりということで、神社では立派な菊の品評会が行われ、それはもう美しい菊の花が咲き誇っておりまして、観光には最高の日和。
弥彦神社には多くの観光客が訪れていて、心も弾む日でございました。
さて、まず屋号を読むのが難しいと思いますが、ヨノウヅヤと読みまして、創業当初にはもう原型と言えるお菓子が存在していたそうで、昭和27年に女将が「雲がくれ」と名付けたのだそうです。
個人的に、この「雲がくれ」というワードは、心にピンと来るものがあります。
それは小学校一年生の時に、担任の先生に教えてもらって熱中した百人一首です。
それも「源氏物語」で紫式部の一首でございます。
「巡りあひて 見しやそれとも 分かぬ間に 雲がくれにし 夜半の月かな」
という歌なのですが、これが少年時代の僕はとにかくお気に入りだったのです。
もちろん、試合では絶対に取り逃がしたくはない十八番としておりました。
この銘菓「雲がくれ」は、まさにこの歌の世界を表現したものと言われています。
ふわっ、シュワッと溶けていく淡雪の中央に、黄身あんを据えていて、この構成こそが、まさに歌の中にある雲に隠れる月を表現しているのです。
まさに雲のように、ふわふわと弾むように柔らかく、シュワッと溶けますと共に、黄身あんのまろやかな卵の風味が引き立ってくる、卵尽くしのひと品。
その優しい味わいを確かめつつ、歌の世界に身を置いてみるわけです。
突然すれ違い様に久しぶりに出逢いましたのに、月が雲に隠れて、あなたであったように思うのですが、ちゃんとその姿を確かめることができなくて、本当にあなたなのかわからぬまま、でもそうであったのではないかと、このざわつく胸の中の溢れる想いはおさまりはしない。
そんな恋心を託して、この菓子を味わってみるという趣向は、見事だと思うのです。

Yonouzuya’s ”Kumo-Gakure” 8pieces￥1,050～
When I go to Niigata for work, I mainly go around places in Nagaoka and Niigata, but on a whim, I got off at Tsubame-Sanjo Station, headed for Yahiko Shrine, and went to Yonouzuya.
A chrysanthemum fair was being held a the shrine, so the beautiful chrysanthemums were in full bloom. Many tourists were there visiting and it was an exciting day.
This store has famous sweets that I’ve always been interested in.
I had previously bought these sweets at a department store in Niigata, but I wanted to go and check them out, so I stopped in at the shop in Yahiko.
The shop name is read as YO-NO-U-ZU-YA. Apparently, when the store was founded, they already had the prototype for this sweet, and the proprietress named it “Kumo-Gakure” in 1952 (Showa 27).
When I hear the name “Kumo-Gakure,” I am reminded of something personal.
When I was in the first grade of elementary school, my homeroom teacher taught me the card game Hyakunin Issyu, and I became obsessed with it. In the game there is a poem by Murasaki Shikibu, the author of “The Tale of Genji.”
This was my favorite of mine during my childhood.
This “Kumo-Gakure” sweet is said to be the exact expression of the world in this poem.
An egg yolk is placed inside a cloud made from egg whites, agar and rock sugar and melted awayuki; this composition is precisely what expresses the moon hiding behind the clouds in the poem. Soft and fluffy like a cloud, the mellow flavor of the egg yolk and bean paste blend stands out in this sweet made from eggs.
While feeling its gentle taste, immerse yourself in the world of the poem:
“I suddenly thought I had found you for the first time in a long time, but the moon was hidden behind the clouds, so I couldn’t be sure it was you. I still don’t know if it was really you, but the stirring feelings in my heart won’t subside.”
The idea of tasting this wagashi while imagining this kind of love is splendid.
