9月に入ってすぐに、五節句の最後にある「重陽の節句」がやってきます。
かつては最も重要視されていた節句でありながら、現代では完全に衰退してしまいました。
雛祭りや端午の節句、七夕など、五節句すべてが新暦でもそのまま置き換えられていますが、重陽の節句も9月9日のまま設定されているのです。
本来ならば、旧暦9月9日ですので、現在の10月半ばあたりに行われていたのです。
しかし、そのまま新暦で9月9日となりますと、まだ残暑が厳しく、何よりもこの節句においては欠かせない菊の花がまったく咲く時季ではないのです。
さらによく似た意味合いの「敬老の日」が生まれたことで、完全に忘却されてしまったというのが、本当のところでしょうか。
さて、そんな「重陽の節句」とは何かと申しますと、秋深まる時季に菊の花を愛でる宴を催すわけでありますが、大輪の菊の花の上に真綿を乗せて、夜露を吸い取り、その綿で体を拭うと不老長寿に恵まれるという言い伝えがあったのです。
それもあって、菊の露はいろんなお菓子やお酒などの名前に用いられてもいます。
そんなお菓子の代表格でありますのが、この「着せ綿」という上生菓子です。
まさに菊の花の上に綿を乗せた姿を、そのままに映し出しておりまして、真っ白なきんとんのそぼろは真綿を表しているというわけです。
さまざまな和菓子屋さんの店頭にも、9月9日を間近にすると姿を現すのです。
東京・青山にある「菊家」さんでは、毎年薄紅色と紫色、黄色の三色の「着せ綿」が登場します。
内側のあんこもそれぞれに変えてあって、菊の花の形も変えながら楽しませてくれるのです。
今年も骨董通りを歩いて、菊家さんを訪ねれば、素敵な女将さんが出迎えてくださり、美しい菊の花の絵柄の入った紙で包んでくださるので、なお一層心が華やかになります。

As soon as September arrives, the last of the five seasonal festivals, The Chrysanthemum Festival, will come.
Although it was once the most important festival, it has declined completely today.
All five seasonal festivals, such as Hinamatsuri (The Doll Festival), Tango no sekku (Boys’ Day), and Tanabata (The Star Festival), are still on the same date on the solar calendar, and the Chrysanthemum Festival is still on September 9th.
Originally, the festival was September 9th in the lunar calendar, which today would be an event around mid-October.
However, these days the lingering summer heat is still severe on September 9th, and more than that, it is not the season for chrysanthemums, which are essential to this festival, to bloom.
Additionally, with the birth of “Respect for the Aged Day,” which has a very similar meaning, the festival might be completely forgotten.
Well, this “Chrysanthemum Festival” is a festival held to admire chrysanthemum flowers as the autumn season deepens. Cotton floss is placed on top of the large chrysanthemum flowers to absorb the night dew. There is a legend that if you wipe your body with the dewey cotton, you will be blessed with eternal youth and longevity.
This is why chrysanthemum dew is used in the names of various WAGASHI sweets and sake.
One representative WAGASHI sweet like this is premium WAGASHI sweet “Kise-Wata.”
This sweet expresses the appearance of a chrysanthemum flower covered with cotton, and the pure white minced kinton represents the cotton floss.
As September 9th approaches, this sweet will be lined up at various Japanese WAGASHI sweet stores.
At Kikuya in Aoyama, Tokyo, three colors of “Kise-Wata,” light pink, purple, and yellow, appear each year.
The red anko bean paste inside also varies, as does the shape of the chrysanthemum flower, which is fun to see.
This year if you visit Kikuya on Kotto-dori, too, you will be greeted personally by the lovely proprietress, and your “Kise-Wata” will be wrapped in paper with a beautiful chrysanthemum pattern, which will brighten your heart.
